  1. Alfred Nobel, the great Swedish inventor and industrialist, was born in Stockholm on October 21, 1833, but moved to Russia with his parents in 1842, where his father, Immanuel, made a strong position for himself in the engineering industry. Imman uel Nobel invented landmine and made a lot of money from the government during the Crimean War, but went bankrupt soon after. Then, the family returned to Sweden in 1859, where Alfred began his own study of explosives in his father‘s lab. He had never been to school or university but had taught himself, and by the time he was twenty, he became a skillful chemist and excellent linguist, speaking Swedish, Russian, German, French and English. He built up over 80 companies in 20 different countries. He was always searching for a meaning to life. He spent much time and money working on how to end the wars, and the peace between nations, until his death in Italy in 1896. His famous last will, in which he left money to provide prizes for outstanding work in physics, chemistry, physiology, medicine, literature and peace, is a memorial to his interests and ideas. 1. Now satellites (卫星)are helping to forecast (预报)the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere (大气), because this is where the weather forms (形成). They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists (气象学家)can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.
Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare them with the earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed dining the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.
So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for three or five days. Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead (提前).

  1. Each time we produce a new English dictionary, our aim is always the same: what can we do to make the dictionary more helpful for students of English? As a result of our research with students and discussions with teachers, we decided to focus on providing more examples for this English dictionary.
Examples help students to remember the word they have looked up in the dictionary because it is easier both to remember and to understand a word within a context (上下文). The examples also show that words are often used in many different contexts. For these reasons, we have included 40 percent more examples in this new book.
We edit all the examples to remove difficult words and to make sure they are easier to understand.

  1. Napoga is a 12-year-old girl in Ghana(加纳), Africa. It is hard for her family to get clean water. Every morning, she leaves home at half past five to get clean water for her family in a village far away. It takes her six hours to get enough clean water for daily(日常) cooking and drinking. She has no time to go to school or to play with her friends. Millions of people in the world are like Napoga. They can’t get enough clean water to keep healthy.
Earth Day is April 22. But on all other days, we must also remember it. The water we use is the
most important natural resource(自然资源) on the earth.
Water covers 70% of the earth‘s surface(表面). But most of that is sea water. We can’t use it for very many things. Fresh water covers only 1% of the earth’s surface.
You probably feel lucky that your life isn’t as hard as Napoga’s. But that doesn’t mean you don’t have to worry about water. We all face serious water problems. One of them is water pollution. All kinds of things from cars, factories, farms and homes make our rivers, lakes, and oceans dirty. Polluted water is very bad for people to drink. And dirty water is bad for fish, too. Now, 34% of all kinds of fish are dying out.
How do cars and factories make our water dirty? First, they pollute the air. Then, when it
Rains, the rain water comes down and makes our drinking water dirty. Dirty rain, called acid rain(酸雨), is also bad for plants, animals and buildings.
Scientists say that in 30 years, more than half of the people in the world won’t have enough
clean water. We have to learn how to save more water for ourselves and our children. Here is some advice for saving water:
●Turn off the water while you brush your teeth. You can save as much as 450 liters(升) each
    month.
●Leaky taps(漏水的龙头)waste a lot of water. Fix them right away!
●You can easily cut your 10-minute showers(沐浴)in half—and you’ll be just as clean.
●When you wash dishes, don’t let the water run.
●Only wash clothes when you have a lot to wash. If your washing machine isn’t full, you’re

  1. There are a few reasons why a home-based business may have trouble in securing business financing(凑集资金) through a bank or credit union:
·Your business isn’t firmly established: If your business is less than two years old, it’s unlikely that a traditional lender will be willing to take a chance on funding your business.
·Your business credit score is lacking: Once you apply for an employer identification(雇主识别)number, you have to start building a business credit score. You can improve the score by paying your bills, establishing trade credit accounts, and staying in business. The business and personal credit score both affect whether a lender is willing to offer you business financing.
·You lack a demonstrated (证明的) need: Taking on debt is a common way for raising funds. However, you should never do so unless you need to. Lenders will refuse to finance a business that can’t clearly show why they need funding, and how they’ll pay it back.
If, as a home business owner, you discover an area that requires serious investment, you should be able to make your case to lenders, whether they are your local bank or an online lender.

2.Although they’re still the lovely young kitten or pup in our minds, your pets need extra care as they reach their senior years. Here’s our list of suggestions to keep them happy and healthy for as long as possible.
Foodie
Keeping your pet’s diet healthy and nutritious (有营养的) is very important at any stage of their life, but as they become old, they need a different set of vitamins and minerals. Different sizes and breeds of pets will have different needs, so it’s worth a quick chat with your vet to discover what they would recommend.
Gym membership
Although they many seem tired and slow for outdoor activities, this doesn’t mean they shouldn’t keep exercise any more. You don’t have to drag them on a 10-mile uphill hike, but encourage your pet to get out into the fresh air. The sights and smells should inspire their natural urge to trot about (慢跑) and explore again. If they’re lazy, try small indoor games and toys that will keep their mind active.
Fit not fat
If you’re feeding your pet healthy foods in appropriate sized portion (份量) and making sure they’re getting enough exercise, you shouldn’t have an overweight friend at your side. However, if you still think they need to lose a few pounds, you can discuss with your vet how to help them lose weight and keep a healthy weight.
The dreaded vets
Not many people enjoy a trip to the doctors and it’s certainly the same for your pet. But regular checks at the vets can prevent minor health issues from getting more and more serious. Older pets should be taken to the vet at least once every six months. On your next visit, ask your vet what common issues usually affect their particular breed (品种) such as arthritis (关节炎) or diabetes (糖尿病). You can then be more careful when taking care of them.

2.Throughout history, humans have suffered from a condition that they have never been able to escape ageing. Some researchers, however, believe we may be thinking about it in the wrong way. They say we should start treating ageing itself as a disease—one that can be prevented and treated.
Their hopes are founded on recent discoveries that suggest biological ageing may be entirely preventable and treatable. From a biological preventive, the body ages at different rates according to genetic and environmental factors. Tiny errors build up in our DNA and our cells begin developing faults that can grow into tissue damage, which leads to ageing and ageing-related diseases.
One of the leading figures in human life research, Aubrey De Grey, explains in an interview that their goal is to develop a set of therapies for middle- raged and older people that will leave them physically and mentally equivalent (相当的) to someone under the age of 30. “Of course, without wiping their memories,” he adds. But he doesn’t think that is will be possible to stop ageing altogether. He sees a future where “rejuvenation technologies” can be applied to old people in order to revert their cells to what they were like when they were in their youth, buying them extra time. The idea is that someone who is treated at the age of 60 will be biologically reverted to 30. But because the therapies are not permanent fixes. Their cells will end up becoming 60 years old again in another 30 years’ time.

解析:根据划线部分所在的上下文“Every grain on the plate comes from hard work ”. But sadly, many of us don’t actually get the real meaning of these lines: Don’t waste food.
According to the UN World Food Program, there were 925 million hungry people around the world in 2011,可知,根据联合国世界粮食计划署的数据,在2011年有9.25亿人口挨饿。
Keep an eye on what food you have at home. Don’t buy too much, especially for vegetables and fruit.
Six million children die of hunger every year. Luckily, a number of people have realized the importance of saving food. A CCTV program reported that the food Chinese people throw away every year is enough to feed 200 million people for a year. Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten all the food on the table可知D符合文意。

  1. People in some countries cannot use their native language for Web addresses. Neither can Chinese speakers, who have to rely on pinyin. But last Friday, ICANN, the Web’s governing body, approved the use of up to 16 languages for the new system. More will follow in the coming years.
The Internet is about to start using the 16 languages of the world. People will soon be able to use addresses in characters (字符) other than those of the Roman alphabet (字母表). The change will also allow the suffix (后缀) to be expressed in 16 other alphabets, including traditional and simplified Chinese characters.
But there are still some problems to work out. Experts have discussed what to do with characters that have several different meanings. This is particularly true of Chinese.
Most experts doubt the change will have a major effect on how the Internet is used. “There will be some competition between companies to obtain popular words for addresses.”

  1. Do you know how to use a mobile phone without being rude to the people around you?
Talking during a performance irritates (激怒) people. If you are expecting an emergency call, sit near the exit doors and set your phone to vibrate (振动). When your mobile phone vibrates, you can leave quietly and let the others enjoy the performance.
Think twice before using mobile phones in elevators, museums, churches or other indoor public places – especially enclosed spaces. Would you want to listen to someone’s conversation in these places? Worse yet, how would you feel if a mobile phone rang suddenly during a funeral! It happens more often than you think. Avoid these embarrassing situations by making sure your mobile phone is switched off.
When eating at a restaurant with friends, don’t place your mobile phone on the table. This conveys the message that your phone calls are more important than those around you.
Mobile phones have sensitive microphones that allow you to speak at the volume you would on a regular phone. This enables you to speak quietly so that others won’t hear the details of your conversations. If you are calling from a noisy area, use your hand to direct your voice into the microphone.
Many people believe that they can’t live without their mobile phone. Owning a mobile phone definitely makes life more convenient, but limit your conversations to urgent ones and save the personal calls until you are at home.

  1. Have you ever heard of a pawpaw(木瓜)? If not, do not feel bad. Many Americans do not know of the fruit, although it is native to the U.S. Once, however, it was one of the most popular fruits in North America. Happily, those who love the pawpaw are trying to return it to its former position in American foods.
(66)A pawpaw is a tropical fruit that used to be grown along the East Coast from New York to Florida and all over the eastern U.S. At one time, it could be found as far west as Nebraska.
The pawpaw was an important food for Native Americans and even early European settlers. Pawpaws reportedly were a favorite treat of George Washington, the first U.S. president, who especially liked them cold. Thomas Jefferson, the third U.S. president, was also a fan of the fruit. He planted pawpaws at his home in Virginia. He also sent pawpaw seeds to his friends in France, American explorers Lewis and Clark wrote in their journals about the pawpaw.
The pawpaw is difficult to be sold commercially. The fruit requires a very special environment—low, wet areas that sometimes flood. It has a very short harvest season, from two to three weeks in September and October. In addition, the fruit is good to eat for only two to three days after harvesting. This makes it hard to sell anywhere distant from the pawpaw tree it comes from.
Planters are again growing pawpaw trees and harvesting the fruit. In several states farmers have organized “pawpaw festivals” to reintroduce people to food. At such a festival in Maryland recently, farmers displayed different products made with pawpaws, like pawpaw jams, pies, ice-cream and beer.

  1. Do you know how to play a game called “Musical Chairs”? It is easy to play and most people enjoy it. All you need are some chairs, some people and some way of making music. You may use a piano or any other musical instrument, if someone can play it. You may use a tape recorder. You can even use a radio.
Put the chairs in a row. The chairs may be put in twos, back to back. A better way is to have the chairs in one row with each chair facing in the opposite direction to the chair next to it.
The game is easy. When the music starts, the players walk round the chairs. Everyone goes in the same direction, of course, they should walk in time to the music. If the music is fast they should walk quickly. If the music is slow, they should walk slowly.
The person playing music cannot see the people in the game. When the music stops, the players
try to sit on the chairs. If a person cannot find a chair to sit on, he drops out. Then, before the
music starts again, one chair must be taken away. When the music stops again, one more player will be out.

The first aid (急救) you learn from a course is not quite like reality. Most of us feel afraid when dealing with “the real thing”. By overcoming these feelings, we are better able to use the first aid to cope with the unexpected.
Doing your part
First aid is not an exact science, and is thus open to human error. No matter how hard you try, the casualty (伤者) may not respond as hoped. Some conditions might lead to death, even with the best medical care.
Giving care with confidence
The casualty needs to feel protected and in safe hands. You can create an air of confidence and safety by:
· Being in control, both of yourself and the problem;
· Acting calmly and reasonably;
· Being gentle, but firm, with your hands, and speaking to the casualty kindly, but hopefully.
Building up trust
Talk to the casualty throughout your examination and treatment (治疗).
· Explain what you are going to do.
· Try to answer questions honestly to reduce fears as best as you can. If you do not know the answer, say so.

When we deal with the real cases of first aid, we often feel ___________.回答

  1. safe
    B. afraid
    C. excited
    D. confident

An air of confidence and safety is important in giving first aid because the casualty needs to feel to be ___________.回答

  1. in control
    B. comfortable
    C. in safe hands
    D. gentle but firm
Which of the following can be a way to build up the casualty’s trust?回答

8.Before the grass has thickened on the roadsides and leaves have started growing on the trees is a perfect time to look around and see just how dirty Britain has become. The pavements are stained with chewing gum and the ditches are full of discarded fast-food packets. Years ago, I remember traveling abroad and being saddened by the plastic bags and discarded bottles. Nowadays. Britain seems to look at least as bad. What has gone wrong?
The problem is that the rubbish created by our increasingly mobile lives lasts a lot longer than before. If it is not cleared up and properly thrown away, it stays in the undergrowth(下层灌木)for years.
It is estimated that 10 billion plastic bags have been given to shoppers. These will take anything from 100 to 1,000 years to rot. However, it is not as if there is no solution to this. A few years ago, the Irish government introduced a tax on non-recyclable carrier bags and in three months reduced their use by 90% – When he was a minister, Michael Meacher attempted to introduce a similar arrangement in Britain. The plastics industry protested, of course. However, they need not have bothered; the idea was killed before it could draw breath, leaving supermarkets free to give away plastic bags.
What is clearly necessary right now is some sort of combined action, both individual and collective, before it is too late. The alternative is to continue sliding downhill until we have a country that looks like a vast rubbish tip. We may well be at the tipping point. Yet we know that people respond to their environment. If things around them are clean and tidy, people behave cleanly and tidily. If they are surrounded by rubbish, they behave like rubbish. Now, much of Britain looks pretty dirty. What will it look like in five years?

What might be the best title for the passage?回答

  1. Plastic Bags
    B. Environment Protection
    C. Dirty Britain
    D. Rubbish Disposal
Why did the plastics industry in Britain protest? 回答

  1. Because a tax was proposed on non-recyclable carrier bags.
    B. Because supermarkets no longer gave away plastic bags.
    C. Because they were blamed for causing plastic pollution.
    D. Because the government did not support them.
What’s the meaning of “sliding downhill” (Para.4) ?回答

  1. working hard to reduce rubbish
    B. producing more plastic bags
    C. encouraging people to use plastic bags
    D. making things worse by taking no action
Which of the following best describes the author’s outlook on the environment?回答

  1. Optimistic.
    B. Confused.
    C. Concerned.
    D. Indifferent.
What’s the purpose of the article? 回答

  1. To encourage the public to take action against rubbish.
    B. To discourage people from supporting the plastics industry.
    C. To call on the government to protect the environment.
    D. To encourage supermarkets to give away recyclable bags.

解析:通过题干中的plastics industry protest定位至第三段:…the Irish government introduced a tax on non-recyclable carrier bags… , Michael Meacher attempted to introduce a similar arrangement in Britain. 所以,选A。
What is clearly necessary right now is some sort of combined action, both individual and collective, before it is too late. The alter¬native is to continue sliding downhill until we have a country that looks like a vast rubbish tip. D:making things worse by taking no action(不采取行动直至事情变得更糟糕)。
Now, much of Britain looks pretty dirty. What will it look like in five years?(现在英国很多地方看起来很脏,五年之后呢?)
B. discourage people from supporting the plastics industry C. call on the government to protect the environment(呼吁政府保护环境),D. encourage supermarkets to give away recyclable bags(鼓励超市赠送可回收包装袋),三个选项均与文章内容不符,所以选A. encourage the public to take action against rubbish(鼓励公众对垃圾采取行动)。
